The village of Camembert is situated in the midst of the Auge country, a region of hedge-rowed fields that is home to many of the cheese and cooking specialities that make up the reputation of Normandy.

 

Bricks, stones, cob and wood
Half-timbered houses are the boast of this countryside. Camembert is overshadowed by the gracious profile of the 18th century Beaumoncel Manor and its outlying buildings, carefully protected and restored.
In the village, the brick schoolhouse is an example of 19th century building. At the Président Farm, the new buildings blend in through a harmonious combination of wood, bricks and stone, while the highlighting of the structure of the old building makes it possible to appreciate the skill of the master-carpenters of old.
Surmounted by its typical Norman bell tower, the 14th century church is representative of those edifices that make up the charm of ‘La Belle France’. The town hall also offers an interesting example of Normandy architecture, as the stone façade contrasts with the half-timbering at the back of the building.

Stopover in a paradise of greenery
The Auge country is unique: its climate, its fields and hedges, its topography all make it a perfect place for dairy farming. A gentle walk through the many sunken lanes around Camembert is enough to take delight in the green countryside, underscored by the many wellsprings rising at bends in the path. In the springtime, the apple trees in flower are like giant bouquets strewn across the hills. The Auge country has been able to stay as one with nature.
